A speakeasy bar is a hidden bar with the same intimate atmosphere as those of the Prohibition era in the United States.

Unlike ordinary bars, these venues feature dimly lit interiors and signature handmade cocktails.

You can now experience this concept in Jakarta at The Cocktail Club in Senopati, South Jakarta.

What Is a Speakeasy Bar?

A speakeasy bar is a hidden bar with a small and private feel. It was inspired by the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933). These bars usually don't have a sign, are hidden behind a secret door, or require a password, and focus on serving high-quality cocktails.

In other words, speakeasy bars have a long history. This history has shaped the way these bars are designed today. To understand their appeal, let's examine their origins and evolution through the following two points.

1. The Origins of Speakeasies in the Prohibition Era

Speakeasies first appeared in the United States in the early 1920s. At that time, the government had completely banned the production and sale of alcohol.

Instead of closing down, bar owners moved to hidden locations. They worked out of basements or secret warehouses.

The name "speakeasy" came about because customers had to speak softly or whisper (speak easy) so as not to be detected by the police. Patrons were also required to use a password or a secret knock to enter.

These places eventually became popular for jazz music and nightlife. Even though Prohibition ended in 1933, people still like these secret places.

2. The Rise of the Modern Speakeasy

The modern speakeasy idea became popular again in 1999 thanks to the Milk & Honey bar in New York. The founder, Sasha Petraske, created a bar with a hidden entrance and a relaxed atmosphere.

Milk & Honey focuses on quality (ingredients) and techniques (making cocktails). They even use special ice cubes that are cut by hand for each glass.

This trend brought back the culture of classic cocktails. Today, speakeasy bartenders are known for their ability to make unique drinks that you can't find in regular bars.

This unique idea has spread to major cities around the world, including Jakarta.

Defining Traits of a Speakeasy Bar

Every speakeasy bar is different from a typical bar. These elements create a more personal experience for guests. Here are three of its characteristics.

1. A Hidden Location

Speakeasy bars are usually hard to find at first. Their doors might be hidden behind bookshelves, cabinets, or in other places that don't seem unusual.

Some of these places are even upstairs or behind a restaurant. Locations like these make stepping inside feel special. You feel like you've found something that not many people know about.

2. A Focus on Craft Cocktails

This speakeasy bar focuses on making great cocktails. The bartenders make drinks using fresh ingredients and precise methods. The menu has some unique flavor combinations.

You'll find cocktails made with ingredients like spices, local fruits, and herbal infusions. These creations are among the main reasons so many people visit this bar.

3. An Intimate Atmosphere

Speakeasy bars prioritize comfort and atmosphere. The lighting is dim, and the interior has a vintage style.

The spaces are usually smaller, which makes conversations feel more intimate. The atmosphere is great for dates, late-night chats, or casual hangouts.

That means you can enjoy a drink without the crowds.

The Cocktail Club, a Speakeasy Bar in Jakarta

Jakarta has several venues that are similar to speakeasy bars. The Cocktail Club in Senopati is one of the most famous.

The bar is on the upper floor of Pierre, located at Jl. Senopati No. 39 in South Jakarta. It's a little hidden, so it feels like a real speakeasy.

The inside of the bar features leather armchairs, dark-green velvet booths, vintage posters, and a hook-shaped bar. The atmosphere is warm, lively, and personal.

The next section explains what you can enjoy at The Cocktail Club.

1. A Range of Cocktails

The Cocktail Club organizes its cocktail menu by flavor.

There are easy-to-enjoy options, such as the Ondeh, which has peanut and tropical flavors.

For stronger flavors, there's the Dirty M (with dominant notes of spirits and herbs).

Fans of classic cocktails can order an Espresso Martini or a Penicillin.

Wine, craft beer, and non-alcoholic options, such as Chocolate "Wine", are also available.

2. The Cocktail Club House Blend

One of the things that makes The Cocktail Club special is its House Blend. The Cocktail Club House Blend is a mix of Bourbon Whiskey, Blended Malt Whiskey, and Blended Scotch Whiskey.

This whiskey is aged for 40 days in oak barrels in our warehouse. The barrels are made in the French region of Limousin. The goal of this process is to make things more complex and interesting.

The scent is complex, with hints of spice, fruit, and toasted oak. The wine's texture is smooth, with hints of spice, fruit, sherry, and toasted oak. Finally, the different flavors linger gently until the end.

3. Food to Pair With Your Drinks

The Cocktail Club also serves food to go with your drinks. The snack menu includes squid fritters and beef tacos.

For a hearty meal, try the Black Angus Tenderloin with truffle and Madeira sauce.

You can also try Nasi Goreng Nugget. It's a great snack for when you're enjoying a few drinks.
